How to Share eSIM Hotspot with Family and Friends

A phone hotspot can share travel eSIM data with nearby family and friends, but everyone uses the same allowance and depends on the host phone. It is useful for a couple checking maps together, a tablet needing a connection or a laptop used briefly while travelling. If the group separates or several people need reliable independent access, individual plans are often the more practical choice.

This guide explains how to set up sharing, choose enough data, control background usage and troubleshoot the connection. It does not assume unlimited connected devices or a guaranteed saving.

Choose a plan for the combined usage

Start with your destinations, trip length and what every connected device will do. Hotspot sharing does not multiply the purchased data. The Europe+ examples below suit an included European route; other trips need a matching country or regional product.

Three Europe+ options for a shared connection

Europe+ lists France, Italy, Greece and Germany among its destinations. These are examples for a route within its included list, not coverage for every European country or a promise of uninterrupted service.

A larger fixed pool

Europe+ fixed 20GB / 30 days

One total allowance shared by the host phone and connected devices. A useful starting point if you prefer tracking a larger trip-wide pool rather than a daily high-speed allowance.

20GB is not provided to each person, and it is not refreshed daily. Size it against your group's actual needs.

Buy Europe+ 20GB

Balanced light sharing

Europe+ Unlimited Essential / 7 days

The product describes 1GB of high-speed data daily, then continued data at up to 1.25 Mbps. A balanced option for a week of everyday phone use with occasional sharing.

That daily allowance is shared across devices. It is not the best fit for several people streaming or downloading at once.

Current price: see the selected option.

Buy Europe+ Essential

More frequent sharing

Europe+ Unlimited Plus / 7 days

The product describes 2GB of high-speed data daily, followed by data at up to 2 Mbps. Choose Plus over Essential for heavier shared use within those limits.

More high-speed data does not guarantee smooth simultaneous video calls or unrestricted laptop use. Plus is not Premium.

One hotspot or separate eSIMs?

Share when you stay together

A shared hotspot works well for short sessions, light use and nearby devices. Only the host needs the travel eSIM for that connection; the other devices connect over compatible Wi-Fi.

Everyone depends on the host phone's reception, battery and available data. Guests lose that shared connection when they move out of range or the hotspot stops.

Choose separate plans for independence

Separate plans are more practical when travelers split up, need their own transport apps or make calls and upload media independently.

Each phone needs its own compatibility and carrier-unlock checks. Separate purchases provide separate allowances rather than a single shared bottleneck.

What hotspot sharing does, and what it does not do

The host phone uses its mobile-data connection and shares it through a Wi-Fi hotspot. Nearby devices join that Wi-Fi network using the hotspot name and password. This is also called tethering.

Sharing does not install the host's eSIM on another phone, transfer the plan or create a second allowance. It also does not share native calls, SMS or a phone number. Internet-based apps use the shared data connection through each device's own account.

Europe+ describes hotspot support where the device and network permit it, within the selected allowance and speed limits. Do not turn that product statement into a promise about every AloOui offer or every phone.

Check these things before relying on a hotspot

  1. The host is an eSIM-compatible, carrier-unlocked phone.
  2. The selected product includes your actual destinations and supports the sharing you need.
  3. The host has working mobile data before you try to share it.
  4. The host supports the guest devices' Wi-Fi connection and enough simultaneous connections for your needs.
  5. You have adequate battery power and can keep the devices nearby.
  6. The allowance and duration suit the combined usage, not just the host phone.

Check the exact phone's device limit rather than assuming a universal number for iPhone or Android. A tablet, laptop or watch may have its own Wi-Fi requirements; do not assume every Wi-Fi-capable device will connect in every configuration.

Set up the AloOui data line first

  1. Install using the purchased plan's email instructions over stable Wi-Fi.
  2. When ready in supported coverage, enable AloOui and select it for mobile data.
  3. Enable data roaming for the travel line as instructed.
  4. Disable data roaming on your home line and avoid automatic mobile-data switching where supported.
  5. Test a small webpage on the host phone before enabling the hotspot.

For Europe+, installation alone does not start validity; activation occurs on connection to a supported network in an included destination. If you are already in covered territory, enabling the line and connecting can start the plan. Follow the purchased option's timing instructions.

Share from an iPhone

  1. Confirm that AloOui is the selected mobile-data line and its data connection works.
  2. Open Personal Hotspot in Settings. Depending on the device and software, it may also appear within Cellular or Mobile Data settings.
  3. Enable Allow Others to Join and review the Wi-Fi password.
  4. On the guest device, open Wi-Fi settings, choose the host phone's hotspot and enter that password.
  5. Test the guest connection and keep the devices close together.

If Personal Hotspot is missing or unavailable, check the exact device, mobile-data setup and provider instructions. Do not assume the absence of the menu proves that buying a larger allowance will fix it.

Share from an Android phone

  1. Confirm that the AloOui line is selected for mobile data and works on the host.
  2. Search the phone's settings for Hotspot or Tethering. Menu names differ between brands and software versions.
  3. Enable the Wi-Fi hotspot and set a name and strong password.
  4. Join that Wi-Fi network on the guest device using the password.
  5. Review any device limit, automatic shutoff or power-saving setting if the connection stops unexpectedly.

Use the manufacturer's instructions for your exact model if the menu differs. A generic Android path does not apply to every phone.

Control usage on every connected device

A laptop can treat a phone hotspot as an ordinary Wi-Fi connection and start downloads or backups. Set a metered or low-data connection where supported, and pause automatic updates, cloud photo uploads and large file syncing before joining.

Do the same on guest phones and tablets. Selecting Wi-Fi-only updates is not enough if the device regards the hotspot as Wi-Fi. Review the actual background-download settings rather than assuming mobile-data controls on the guest protect the host's allowance.

Download maps and entertainment before departure, use suitable video quality and disconnect devices when they are no longer needed. Check usage regularly on the host and guest devices, recognising that their counters may differ from provider usage records.

Choose data by activity, not headcount alone

Two people uploading videos can use more data than a larger group checking directions and messages. Review recent usage on the devices you will take, add the likely shared activities and leave room for unexpected needs.

Fixed data is one pool for the trip. Essential and Plus have daily high-speed limits followed by reduced-speed data. Sharing draws from the same pool or daily limit, and simultaneous users share the available connection speed.

For frequent laptop work or several heavy users, I would choose Plus over Essential within a daily plan, or consider an adequately sized fixed allowance and separate plans for anyone needing independent access. Do not promise a fixed group size can always fit a particular allowance.

Battery, range and a simple group backup

Hotspot use adds to the host phone's workload. Bring a suitable charger or power bank, keep the phone ventilated and out of direct sun, and plan charging breaks.

Set a meeting point and share offline tickets, directions and important addresses before separating. A guest without independent mobile data should not assume the hotspot will remain available when the host leaves.

Protect the hotspot with a strong password, share it only with intended users and switch it off when finished. This does not create a blanket security guarantee, but it avoids leaving an unnecessary shared connection open.

The hotspot connects, but there is no internet

  1. Test mobile data on the host. If it also fails, troubleshoot the travel line first.
  2. Check the included destination, remaining allowance and plan validity.
  3. Confirm that AloOui remains the mobile-data line and required roaming is enabled.
  4. Follow the purchased plan's APN instructions. Europe+ lists data.esim, with username and password blank if manual entry is required.
  5. Disconnect and reconnect the guest device, checking the hotspot password.
  6. Try a restart or a location with better reception. Keep the eSIM profile installed.

If the host works but the guest does not, focus on hotspot settings, guest Wi-Fi compatibility and the device's connection limits. Contact the AloOui Help Center with the model, location, order number and error details if needed.

The hotspot is slow or keeps disconnecting

  1. Move the devices closer and reduce the number actively using the connection.
  2. Pause downloads, backups and video streams on all devices.
  3. Check whether the daily high-speed allowance has been used.
  4. Review automatic hotspot shutoff and battery-saving settings.
  5. Check the host's temperature, power and reception; try a better location.
  6. Use the exact device's supported Wi-Fi compatibility options if a guest cannot stay connected.

Do not assume 5G reception on the host guarantees a particular speed on every guest device. Radio conditions, plan limits and simultaneous activity all matter.

Compare sharing costs fairly

Compare the current cost of a suitably sized shared plan with separate plans that meet each traveler's needs. Include any extra allowance you expect to need and the value of independent access.

A low advertised starting price is not proof that one small option can serve a whole family. Sharing may reduce the number of purchases, but there is no universal saving percentage and no single carrier roaming rate that applies to everyone.

Also visiting the UK?

If you need a UK number with native calls or SMS, compare the selected options in the UK number and calls guide. This is a separate purchase. A hotspot connection does not pass the host's native phone number or SMS service to other devices.

Buying help in your language

Shop with AI is available on the AloOui website and app and can help in many different languages. Share your destinations, trip length, device use and whether the group will stay together. Compare the selected plan's current allowance and sharing terms before purchasing.

Family and friends hotspot FAQs

Does every guest need a travel eSIM?

Not for the shared Wi-Fi connection. The host provides mobile data; guests need compatible Wi-Fi and must stay within range.

Does sharing copy the eSIM to another phone?

No. It shares an internet connection, not the eSIM profile or a separate allowance.

How many devices can connect?

Check the exact host phone's specifications and settings. Do not assume a universal iPhone or Android limit.

Does each person get the full allowance?

No. The host and guests use the same purchased allowance.

Is Unlimited unrestricted high-speed sharing?

No. Essential and Plus have daily high-speed limits followed by reduced-speed terms.

Which daily plan suits heavier sharing?

Plus offers more daily high-speed data than Essential. Match it to total usage and consider separate plans for heavy independent users.

Can a locked guest phone join?

A guest uses Wi-Fi rather than installing the host's travel eSIM. Its Wi-Fi compatibility and any device restrictions still matter.

Why do laptop updates use so much of the plan?

The laptop may see the hotspot as ordinary Wi-Fi. Pause background downloads and use metered settings where supported.

Does the hotspot share calls or SMS?

No. It provides internet access; native number services remain separate.

Does sharing eliminate home-carrier charges?

No. Manage home-line data, calls and SMS under the carrier's own terms.

Should everyone share if the group separates?

No. Choose independent access for travelers who need data away from the host.

Does hotspot use affect battery?

It adds workload to the host. Plan charging and keep the device ventilated.

What if guests connect without internet?

Test the host's data first, then check allowance, active line, hotspot settings and guest Wi-Fi.

Where do I see current prices?

Use the product links above and confirm the selected allowance and duration before purchasing.
