Best Travel Apps for Smarter, Safer & Connected Trips
Which travel apps should you prepare before departure?
Start with Google Maps for places and routes, Google Translate for language help, TripIt for organising confirmations, and the official apps for your booked airline, accommodation and transport. Download supported offline content and test it before flying. A small set you have signed into and checked is more useful than dozens of unfamiliar apps.
This is a practical shortlist by task, not a measured ranking or a promise that every feature works in every destination. App availability, subscriptions and local services can change. Individual destination guides cover local transport or specialist uses in more detail.

Google Maps: prepare places, not just a destination name
Save your accommodation's exact location and identify the relevant arrival terminal or station. Where offline downloads are available, download an area covering the intended route before departure.
Offline Google Maps is not equivalent to all online navigation. Google states that offline walking, cycling and transit directions are unavailable; offline driving also lacks live traffic and alternate routes. Save separate arrival instructions when you will need those details.
Read Google's offline Maps limits. Confirm local signage and current transport arrangements rather than treating any map as a guarantee of access.
Google Translate: download the languages you need
Download supported language packs on Wi-Fi and test a short phrase without connectivity before travelling. If a language has no download option, do not assume it will work offline.
Google's instructions support offline downloaded languages, with camera features dependent on supported languages. Do not promise offline voice translation in a fixed number of languages or assume every online feature remains available. Keep important addresses and essential information in a form you can show directly.
Check Google's language-download instructions. For important medical, legal or other high-stakes conversations, seek appropriate human assistance rather than relying solely on automated translation.
TripIt: gather confirmations in one itinerary
TripIt can organise travel confirmations into a single itinerary. Its published workflow allows forwarding confirmation emails to plans@tripit.com, and its help also describes manual entry.
After importing, compare the dates, local times, addresses and booking references against the original provider confirmations. Keep those originals available too. An organised itinerary is not proof that a booking has changed or that a provider has received your request.
See TripIt's itinerary workflow. Review sharing and inbox-access permissions before connecting an account; choose the information you are comfortable providing.
Official booking and transport apps: use your actual providers
Install the apps for services you have booked rather than assuming one global app covers every arrival. Sign in before departure and find the booking, contact options and any available offline ticket or document.
Check which tasks need a live connection. A saved confirmation may help you find a booking, but it is not automatically an accepted boarding pass, entry ticket or transport entitlement. Follow the provider's current requirements and keep another way to contact it.
Money and group coordination: keep the setup simple
Use the banking or payment service you already trust and understand, and check its overseas access and charges before travel. This guide does not rank financial products or promise fee-free spending.
For a shared trip, agree how to record expenses, where to meet if separated and which contact method everyone can use. Location sharing needs suitable permissions, battery and service. It is a convenience, not a guarantee of continuous tracking or a substitute for a meeting plan.
Run an offline rehearsal before flying
- Update the apps you intend to use on Wi-Fi, sign in and check account recovery.
- Save booking references, accommodation addresses, provider contacts and accepted travel documents.
- Download supported map areas and language packs.
- Temporarily disconnect and check what actually opens, then reconnect when finished testing.
- Keep a charging plan and a separate copy of essential contact details for a lost or flat phone.

Choose mobile data for the parts that need to be live
Messages to your host, changed travel plans and online route updates can benefit from mobile data where service is supported. Choose a package explicitly including your destinations, with enough allowance and validity for your intended use. An eSIM does not bypass app restrictions, guarantee reception or prevent charges on another phone line.
Shop with AI on the AloOui website or app can help compare your route and usage. Keep first-time installation separate from app preparation: follow the purchased order's settings, and contact AloOui's 24/7 human support when you need help. Validity starts on connection to a supported destination network, not purchase or installation alone.
Use EXTRA20 for 20% off eligible eSIMs when you spend $50 USD on qualifying products. Cannot combine with other discounts.
Download the AloOui app
Download AloOui for easier travel-data shopping through the Apple App Store or Google Play. Check the selected package before checkout.
Travel-app FAQs
Which apps should I start with?
Google Maps, Google Translate, TripIt and the official apps for the services you have booked are a useful starting shortlist.
Does downloading Google Maps provide offline public transport directions?
No. Google states that offline transit, walking and cycling directions are unavailable.
Can every Google Translate language be downloaded?
No. Check for a download option and test the supported language before leaving.
Does TripIt replace my original confirmation?
Keep the original and verify imported details against it. Itinerary organisation does not establish a booking change.
Will a travel eSIM make every app work abroad?
No. App availability, permissions, accounts, local restrictions and supported connectivity still matter.
Does location sharing guarantee we can find each other?
No. Agree an offline meeting plan as well as your preferred app.
Should I download and test apps after landing?
Prepare and test them before departure when practical, including saved content with connectivity temporarily off.
