Hong Kong Family Trips: One Hotspot or an eSIM for Each Phone?
Make your Hong Kong family trip easier with data that fits how you spend the day. If everyone stays together and only needs occasional internet, one phone's hotspot can be a useful sharing option. If adults split up for shopping, sightseeing or different activities, an eSIM for each compatible phone that needs independent data is the more practical choice.
Our recommendation: choose by person, not just by group size
For a phone used independently for maps and messages, compare Essential 7 Days at a checked $38.86 USD. For clearly heavier daily use or a busier shared connection, compare Plus 7 Days at a checked $77.71 USD.
For a lighter total budget, fixed data starts at a checked $4.85 for 1GB/7 days. You can choose different allowances for different family members instead of buying the same large plan for everyone.

One hotspot or separate eSIMs?
One hotspot: useful when you stay together
Other devices connect to the phone sharing its mobile data, within that hotspot's usable range. This can suit occasional shared use, subject to device support and selected plan terms.
All connected devices use the same allowance. The sharing phone must remain available, with battery, hotspot enabled and supported mobile service.
Separate eSIMs: practical for separate plans
Each compatible phone can use its own purchased plan where supported service is available, without depending on another family member's hotspot nearby.
Choose this when people expect to explore separately or want their own data allowance. Each device needs its own compatibility check and setup.
Plan around a real family day
Imagine one person browsing shops in Tsim Sha Tsui while another heads elsewhere for sightseeing. Once they move beyond hotspot range, the shared connection is no longer a practical source of data for both phones.
If the family stays together for a meal or a day out, a hotspot may be enough for brief online tasks. Choose based on those expected moments rather than assuming one plan fits every person's itinerary.
Different people can choose different allowances
A lighter user might compare a fixed-data plan for occasional maps and messages. Someone using data throughout the day can start with Essential. A person sharing larger uploads or providing a busier hotspot can compare Plus.
Check a representative day's actual usage for each phone. For a hotspot, add the connected devices' browsing, streaming, uploads and background activity to the host phone's own tasks.
A useful price comparison for two phones
At the checked prices, two Essential 7 Days plans cost $77.72 USD in total. One Plus 7 Days plan costs $77.71. Those similar totals buy different arrangements: two Essential plans provide separate 1GB daily full-speed allowances, while one Plus plan has a single 2GB daily full-speed allowance that connected devices share through a hotspot.
Separate plans can be the more practical choice for two people exploring independently. A single Plus plan may suit sharing while together. Compare each person's needs and current prices; allowances are not automatically transferable or pooled between separately purchased plans.
Keep shared usage easy to manage
Set a strong hotspot password and connect only the devices you intend to share with. Review optional photo backups, large downloads and streaming so they do not unexpectedly take most of the allowance.
Check the host phone's battery before a long outing. More data cannot compensate for a phone that is switched off or out of hotspot range. For work-managed devices, follow employer rules rather than changing security controls.
Make meeting up simple
Agree on a specific meeting point and time, and save accommodation details offline on the phones that need them. Keep an agreed contact method ready; data alone does not establish a local number or ordinary call-and-SMS allowance.
If family members choose to share live locations, make it consensual and private. Do not rely on it for continuous tracking, precise positioning or emergency protection.
Hong Kong coverage and Macau visits
The reviewed product names Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, Lantau and the New Territories, with travel areas including Mong Kok, Victoria Peak and Sai Kung. Data and hotspot work where supported network service is available, subject to selected terms.
Reception and speeds vary with the device, network, congestion and location. Indoor venues, underground routes, remote areas and journeys on boats may have different service; continuous 5G is not guaranteed.
If you also visit Macau or mainland China, confirm the destination is included in the exact plan. Hong Kong coverage does not automatically add either destination.
Set up the family phones before you need data
- Check each exact phone model and regional version for eSIM support and confirm it is carrier-unlocked.
- Choose the allowance and duration for each phone needing its own plan.
- After purchase, open the emailed QR code on another screen or use supplied manual details. Keep each installation associated with the intended phone and order.
- Use stable Wi-Fi to add the eSIM through iPhone Cellular/Mobile Data or Android SIM manager. Menu names vary.
- Label the travel line and save the delivery instructions offline. Follow the selected activation rules; installation alone does not establish pre-arrival service.
- In Hong Kong, select the travel line for mobile data and follow its roaming and APN instructions. Test a small webpage.
- If sharing, enable Personal Hotspot or Mobile Hotspot, set its password and connect the intended nearby devices.
Do not assume one QR code can be installed across several phones or transferred after installation. Follow the selected installation terms. Review home-line roaming and automatic data switching separately to manage possible carrier charges.
Match validity to the whole visit
Include arrival through departure, not just hotel nights. Choose a daily-allowance duration that covers the itinerary under its activation rules, or compare a fixed-data plan with enough total data and appropriate validity.
Do not assume unused daily data rolls over or validity pauses while using hotel Wi-Fi. Follow the selected reset and expiry instructions.
If a shared device cannot get online
- Check whether the host phone can open a small webpage using the travel line.
- If the host works, check hotspot support, password, usable range and the other device's Wi-Fi connection.
- If the host has no data either, check validity, remaining allowance, mobile-data selection and supplied roaming/APN settings.
- Restart or toggle airplane mode where appropriate and supported service exists. Try Automatic network selection first, then only supported networks named in the delivery instructions.
- For help, contact the AloOui Help Center with the relevant order reference, phone model, location and error details. Do not delete the installed eSIM without guidance.

Hong Kong family eSIM FAQs
Does everyone need a separate eSIM?
Not necessarily. Decide which phones need independent data. A hotspot can suit occasional use while everyone stays nearby.
What is better when we explore separately?
A separate plan for each compatible phone that needs independent data, rather than relying on one hotspot.
Does each connected device get the full host allowance?
No. Hotspot devices share the selected host plan's allowance.
Can we choose different tiers?
Yes. Match each separately purchased plan to that person's usage.
Does Plus guarantee better reception?
No. It has a larger daily full-speed allowance, not guaranteed reception or speed.
Can unused data move between separate plans?
Do not assume allowance transfers or pooling are included.
Can one QR code serve the whole family?
Do not assume multi-device installation. Follow the selected installation terms.
Does the plan automatically include Macau?
No. Check the exact destination list before relying on it outside Hong Kong.
