Why eSIM Is Changing Travel Connectivity
Travel connectivity should fit your journey, not add another stop to it. An eSIM lets you buy a mobile-data plan digitally and install it on a compatible phone without swapping a physical SIM card. For travelers, that means more time for maps, bookings and messages, and less time organizing connectivity after arrival.
But a convenient purchase is only part of the experience. Coverage, price, data allowance and setup conditions still matter. This guide explains how eSIM changes travel planning and what AloOui's 2026 connectivity research can help you compare.

Travel eSIM and roaming: what changes?
Using your home plan abroad
Your home provider determines roaming destinations, allowances and charges. Check whether your trip is included and how extra data is billed. Keeping your home line active can be useful for calls or messages, but check its roaming settings.
Buying a travel eSIM
You choose a separate plan for its listed destinations, allowance and validity. Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. A data-only travel eSIM does not provide a local number or native calls and SMS; internet-based calling apps use its data.
From SIM-card swaps to digital preparation
The practical change is being able to prepare connectivity before you leave. Purchase a suitable plan, open the QR-code email and install it while you have a stable internet connection. Installation and activation are not the same: AloOui travel-plan validity starts when the eSIM first uses data on a supported network, not when it is installed.
At your destination, select the AloOui line for mobile data and follow its roaming and network instructions. This reduces preparation on arrival, but connection speed still depends on the selected plan, phone, location and network conditions.
What AloOui's 2026 index adds to the conversation
The AloOui Global Travel Connectivity Index 2026 compares 20 selected destinations across six dimensions: network quality, eSIM availability, data affordability, coverage and 5G, tourist convenience, and connectivity environment.
In the published index, Thailand leads with 91.1, followed by Germany at 88.8 and Singapore at 87.9. The average is 72.4, and five of the 20 destinations score at least 80.
The useful lesson is to compare more than headline speed. A travel plan also needs to fit your budget, route and arrival needs. The index combines these different dimensions rather than treating a single network measurement as the whole experience.
These are AloOui's research findings, not an independent endorsement of AloOui plans. The scores are relative to the 20 destinations studied, not a worldwide ranking of every country or a guarantee of performance on your selected eSIM.

Turn the research into a better buying decision
Start with every destination on your itinerary. A single-country eSIM suits a trip within its coverage list; a regional plan may fit a multi-country route. Never assume a regional plan includes every country in a continent.
Next, match the allowance to your usage. Fixed data can suit lighter use. Essential is a balanced option where available, while Plus offers more high-speed data for heavier use on the verified Thailand product. Unlimited plans still have daily high-speed allowances and reduced-speed conditions.
Finally, check your exact device model, validity, hotspot terms and whether you need calls or SMS. For setup or order questions, AloOui provides 24/7 human support through the Help Center.

Frequently asked questions
Why is eSIM changing travel connectivity?
It lets travelers buy and install a separate mobile plan digitally on a compatible, unlocked device, without swapping a physical SIM. You can prepare before departure and choose coverage and allowances for your trip.
Does installing an AloOui travel eSIM start its validity?
No. Installation alone does not start the travel plan's validity. Validity starts when the eSIM first uses data on a supported network in its covered destination.
Does the index rank eSIM providers?
No. It compares 20 selected destinations across six connectivity dimensions. It is not a provider ranking or a guarantee of the performance of an individual plan.
Are the index's prices the prices of AloOui plans?
Not necessarily. The study describes qualifying travel-eSIM prices gathered for its research period. Use the AloOui product page for the current price and terms of the plan you intend to buy.
Does Unlimited mean full-speed data throughout the plan?
No. For the Thailand plans shown here, Essential includes 1GB/day of high-speed data, followed by up to 1.25 Mbps. Plus includes 2GB/day, followed by up to 2 Mbps. The high-speed allowance resets daily.
Can I share the Thailand plan's data with my laptop?
Hotspot sharing is listed for this product where your device and network support it. It uses the same allowance and is subject to the selected plan's speed conditions.
