Check your phone before departure so your travel eSIM is ready for maps, messages and bookings when you need it. If a profile will not install, start with the exact device, available setup method and error wording. An installation problem is not automatically a faulty plan or a faulty phone. These eight checks help separate device readiness from QR-code and mobile-data problems.

Device readiness or a different problem?

1. Confirm the exact model

Check the full device model against the manufacturer's current specifications. A family name such as iPhone, Galaxy or Pixel is not enough to establish every model's eSIM support.

For Motorola, Xiaomi, OnePlus, OPPO, Sony and other brands, use their exact-model guidance rather than a generic Android compatibility promise. Buying a plan or installing an app cannot create missing eSIM hardware.

2. Confirm the regional version

Use the complete model number and the market version your device was sold for. Similarly named phones can have different capabilities. Do not assume a phone bought in one country matches every version reviewed online.

If specifications are unclear, ask the manufacturer whether that exact regional device supports the intended eSIM setup method. Avoid blanket claims about all phones sold in a particular market.

3. Check carrier unlocking separately

A phone can support eSIM yet restrict which provider's plan it accepts. Confirm unlock status and remaining restrictions with the original carrier. AloOui cannot bypass a carrier lock.

After an unlock, follow the carrier and provider's next-step guidance. Do not automatically delete or reinstall an existing travel profile.

4. Use supported software and the correct menu

Follow the manufacturer's update guidance for your exact device. There is no universal Android version that gives every handset eSIM support, and a software update does not guarantee an unsupported model becomes compatible.

On supported iPhones, setup is under Cellular or Mobile Data and Add eSIM. Samsung's referenced guide uses Connections → SIM card manager → Add mobile plan. Google's Pixel guide uses Network & internet → SIMs → Add SIM → Set up an eSIM. Labels and methods can differ by device, software and provider.

5. Distinguish stored profiles from active lines

The number of profiles a device can store and the number it can use at once are different limits. Check the exact device guidance and any error message rather than applying a universal eight-profile or two-active-line rule.

If the phone reports a capacity limit, identify existing profiles and their recovery terms before deciding what to change. Do not delete a profile simply because it is currently unused; it may still be needed and may not be recoverable in the same way.

6. Check the installation connection

Use a reliable internet connection to download the profile, following the device and delivered instructions. Complete any network sign-in before starting.

Samsung's official guidance permits Wi-Fi or a mobile-data connection for setup. Do not treat another SIM's data as universally unsuitable. The important checks are whether your connection works and whether it fits the applicable setup instructions.

7. Check the credential and existing installation

Confirm that you are using the delivery details for the correct order and whether the travel profile already appears in SIM settings.

If the code is invalid, expired or already used, use the dedicated QR-code guide and contact support with the exact message. Supplied manual details are an alternative input method, not a way to bypass an invalid or already-used entitlement.

8. Check work-device permissions before changing settings

For a managed phone, confirm permitted mobile plans and setup methods with your IT team. Keep required security and management controls in place.

A restart may help with a temporary device issue, but resets are not a universal first step. Understand the consequences of the exact reset option before using it, and do not erase SIM profiles or other data without appropriate guidance.
