London Tube with Apple Pay: Use the Same Device to Tap In and Out

Which device should you use to tap out after tapping in with Apple Pay?

Use the same iPhone and payment card you used to tap in. TfL specifically says not to touch in with an iPhone and out with an Apple Watch or physical contactless card. Using the same bank account on different devices is not the same as completing the journey with the same device.

On the Tube, touch in at the start and out at the end, even if the gates are open. Buses and trams are different: TfL says to touch in only. This guide covers payment-reader preparation, not fare quotations or a hands-on card test. TfL and Apple guidance reviewed 28 October 2026.

Prepare one payment method before reaching the gates

TfL accepts Apple Pay for supported pay-as-you-go travel. Check your payment card's eligibility and use the device you intend to keep available throughout the journey. Many overseas contactless cards can be used, but TfL says issuer charges may apply; ask your card issuer about its actual terms.

Read TfL's pay-as-you-go guidance and Apple's public-transport payment guidance. Do not assume every overseas card, prepaid card or other transport operator has identical acceptance rules.

Keep enough battery for the journey. An iPhone used at entry should remain available for the required exit and any inspection. Do not deliberately switch to the watch at the end merely because both devices show the same bank card.

A simple Tube tap-in and tap-out routine

  1. Choose the intended payment card and device before approaching the reader.
  2. Keep other contactless and Oyster cards away from that device to avoid card clash.
  3. Touch the chosen device on the yellow reader at the start of the journey and check that it is accepted.
  4. Keep that same device and card available during the trip.
  5. At the end, touch out with the same device and card, even if the exit gates are open.

If there are no gates, TfL directs passengers to the relevant freestanding yellow reader. Follow station instructions and ask staff if you are unsure rather than treating an open route as confirmation that no touch is needed.

TfL's touching-in-and-out guide explains the reader rules. Its right-fare guidance reinforces the same-card/device requirement.

The same bank card on different devices is not a substitute

TfL gives the exact example: touching in with an iPhone and out with an Apple Watch or contactless card can result in separate incomplete journeys. Keep the phone-versus-watch decision consistent, rather than assuming a shared underlying card merges those touches.

If the original device fails during a journey, ask TfL staff or support about the actual situation. Do not assume tapping a different device will repair the original journey. Adding eSIM data does not correct a fare-payment mismatch.

On buses and trams, touch in only

TfL says to touch the card or device on the yellow reader at the start of a bus or tram journey. You do not need to touch out at the end; doing so can make you pay more than needed.

This exception is why a general “always tap twice” rule is unhelpful. Check the actual transport service and current operator instructions, especially when travelling beyond the TfL arrangement covered here.

Do you need mobile data at the reader?

Apple's Express Transit instructions say the supported device needs to be on, but does not need an internet connection for that payment workflow. Express Transit also avoids waking or unlocking the device or authenticating for the supported tap.

That statement is about eligible Express Transit use, not every online purchase or every card in Wallet. Check the actual card, device and network support using Apple's Express Mode guidance. Review which card is selected before travelling.

Do not assume that a weak phone signal means an otherwise eligible transit tap must fail, or that buying more mobile data changes card acceptance. Phone internet for route planning and contactless payment at a reader are different tasks.

Plan battery, not a guaranteed reserve

Apple describes power-reserve capability for some supported Express cards and devices, but TfL still advises carrying enough battery to complete travel. Do not plan a journey around an assumed reserve duration or assume a powered-off device will always work.

Charge before leaving and keep the payment device usable. A separate physical card can be useful for later travel, but it is not automatically the correct way to finish a journey started with the phone.

Use travel data for the journey planning around the tap

Mobile data can help with maps, current transport information, messages, booking access and onward arrangements where supported service is available. Save important addresses and entrances offline as well. More allowance does not guarantee signal in a tunnel or determine your fare.

For separate phone-line preparation, use the London home-number and travel-data guide. For a change between airports, use the London airport-transfer checklist. Confirm actual transport arrangements independently.

Compare fixed data for a measured total, Essential for balanced daily activity where available, or Plus for clearly heavier connected use. Contactless tapping alone is not a reason to buy the largest data package.

Also travelling around Europe and need a phone number?

UK & EU Prepaid 20GB/30 Days includes a UK mobile number, 20GB total data, 50 minutes and 50 SMS across 30 listed destinations. It is a separate ordinary phone service, not a transport fare or an Apple Pay requirement.

One eSIM. 30 European destinations. One UK number for calls and SMS. Included calls/SMS are from listed destinations to numbers in listed destinations; premium-rate and other destinations are excluded.

No contract or automatic renewal. Six-month number validity is separate from the purchased 30-day package. Verification-message acceptance and delivery are not guaranteed. For data-only regional alternatives, use the Europe range comparison.

Keep payment problems and eSIM problems separate

For an incorrect touch or fare, use TfL's official support and your issuer where relevant. For a declined or unsupported payment card, follow the operator and issuer's guidance. A travel-data support team cannot change the issuer's card acceptance.

If phone internet fails too, check the selected travel line, coverage, allowance, validity and purchased roaming/APN settings. Keep the eSIM installed while investigating. AloOui provides support through the Help Center for connectivity.

Before travelling, confirm exact regional eSIM support and carrier unlocking, then install on stable Wi-Fi using the purchased instructions. AloOui travel validity starts on connection to a supported network in an included destination, not purchase or installation alone. A covered home or transit stop can start it; switching off does not pause it. Review home-line roaming and automatic switching separately.

Does using the same underlying bank card make switching devices safe?

No. TfL specifically warns against mixing a phone, watch and physical card for the journey.

Should I touch out if Tube gates are open?

Yes. TfL says to touch out even if the gates are open.

Should I touch out on a TfL bus or tram?

No. TfL says to touch in only at the start.

What is card clash?

Other contactless or Oyster cards can interfere with using the intended card or device. TfL says to keep them away from the payment device at the reader.

Does supported Express Transit need internet at the tap?

Apple says that workflow does not need an internet connection. Check the actual card, device and service eligibility.

Can I rely on a battery reserve for every journey?

No. Keep enough battery to complete travel and do not assume every device or card has the same reserve capability.

Does an eSIM purchase include London transport fares?

No. Mobile service and transport payment are separate purchases.

TfL and Apple references support the travel-payment guidance; AloOui product pages define mobile purchases. No fares or issuer fees are quoted here.
