Can you keep a microSD card while using travel eSIM on Xperia?

On supported Xperia models, yes: Sony lists Xperia 1 VII XQ-FS54 as supporting one nano-SIM, a microSD card and an eSIM arrangement. The exact model code matters. Another phone with the same commercial Xperia name can have a different tray or no eSIM support.

Researched 28 October 2026 · AloOui Research. Verified examples below are tied to Sony's listed model codes; they are not a blanket promise for every Xperia or regional import.

For a photography-focused trip, that distinction helps you plan both storage and connectivity. Keep space for photos while choosing service for maps, bookings and messages. This guide focuses on the tray-and-eSIM decision, not another general Android installation tutorial.

Use the model code, not only the Xperia name

Sony explains that non-EU phones can share a commercial name while using different model codes and SIM configurations. Its example pairs Xperia 1 VII with XQ-FS54 and XQ-FS72. Do not treat a model-name match as confirmation that both have identical eSIM features.

Find the full model designation for your actual device or ask the seller before purchase. Match it to Sony's model-specific support information, then confirm carrier unlocking and the intended service. For a work-managed phone, also check whether another plan is permitted.

Source: Sony's explanation of Xperia SIM, eSIM and SD-card configurations. It includes a model-code table rather than relying on brand-wide assumptions.

Verified Sony example	Listed arrangement	Travel planning implication
Xperia 1 VII, XQ-FS54	eSIM supported; nano-SIM plus memory-card arrangement	Compare retaining the home nano-SIM and microSD while adding compatible travel eSIM
Xperia 1 VI, XQ-EC54	eSIM supported; nano-SIM plus memory-card arrangement	Check the exact code rather than applying another regional variant's tray rules
Xperia 10 VI, XQ-ES54	eSIM supported; nano-SIM plus memory-card arrangement	Confirm the same specific model before choosing a downloadable plan
A different code or a newer model	Requires its own verification	Do not transfer the examples above automatically

Sony also lists nanoSIM/eSIM and Dual SIM in the UK Xperia 1 VII specifications. This does not establish two active eSIMs or an unlimited number of simultaneously active lines.

What about the newer Xperia 1 VIII?

Sony has a current Xperia 1 VIII product page, but the sources checked for this guide did not establish its exact regional eSIM configuration. Confirm the full model's SIM specifications directly with Sony before buying travel service. Do not copy the VII's supported arrangement onto the VIII merely because it is newer.

Why two physical SIMs can change the storage decision

Some Xperia trays use a slot either for a second physical SIM or a memory card. Others have different arrangements. Sony's SIM-and-microSD explanation shows why the same general advice cannot fit every device.

Before departure, decide whether you need the home physical SIM, another physical service and the microSD card. Where your exact model supports eSIM, a digital travel plan can avoid occupying a physical tray position. It does not add eSIM hardware to an unsupported phone.

Confirm the precise tray configuration and eSIM support for your model code.
Choose which home or work number must remain available.
Check whether the intended physical/eSIM combination can be active with your providers.
Back up important photos before handling storage cards.
Follow Sony's instructions for removing or inserting cards rather than improvising at the airport.

Separate photo storage from mobile-data usage

Saving photos locally and uploading them are different activities. A memory card's capacity is not a mobile-data allowance. Cloud backups, video uploads and hotspot sharing can consume data even when plenty of local storage remains.

Schedule large transfers over suitable Wi-Fi, review background backup settings and keep essential maps and addresses offline. A data-only plan does not add ordinary calls or SMS; internet-based services use connectivity and app access.

Choose travel data after the Xperia checks

For light use on a covered European route, Europe Extra 1GB total / 7 days costs $3.66 USD. For more room for maps, messages and bookings, 5GB total / 30 days costs $11.13 USD. These are total pools, not daily or per-country allowances, and end at exhaustion or expiry without reduced-speed continuation.

For balanced daily use, compare Essential / 7 days at $24.70 USD, with 1GB high-speed daily then up to 1.25 Mbps. For heavier daily use, Plus / 7 days at $49.43 USD provides 2GB high-speed daily then up to 2 Mbps. Premium is different: 30GB high-speed total / 5 days at $40 USD, then up to 2 Mbps until expiry without a daily reset.

Europe Extra is data-only across 38 listed destinations, including the UK, Switzerland, Turkey, Serbia and Moldova. Check every stop and island. Use the Europe range comparison for coverage differences or explore another destination. A regional name does not include every nearby territory.

Which Europe eSIM includes a phone number?

AloOui UK & EU Prepaid 20GB/30 Days costs $59.60 USD and includes a real UK mobile number, 20GB total data, 50 call minutes and 50 SMS across 30 listed destinations, including the UK, Switzerland and Turkey. Included calls and texts are from listed destinations to numbers in those destinations; other destinations and premium-rate services are excluded.

One eSIM. 30 European destinations. One UK number for calls and SMS. On your compatible, unlocked Xperia, use maps between photo stops, call your accommodation and arrange pickups with one shared package.

This is separate from data-only Europe Extra. The 20GB is shared across 30 days, not per day or country, with no automatic renewal. Norway, Iceland, Serbia and Albania are not included. Check the full destination list and exact-device support before purchase.

Explore Europe eSIM with a UK number

The number's six-month validity is separate from the 30-day package; verification-message acceptance and delivery are not guaranteed. For separate UK-only options, see the UK-number buying guide.

Prepare the service without losing an existing profile

Install a new purchased profile over stable Wi-Fi using its delivered instructions and your device's supported method. When ready in included coverage, select AloOui for data and apply that order's roaming and APN settings. Review home-line roaming and automatic switching separately; retaining a number does not make overseas calls or SMS free.

AloOui travel validity starts on connection to a supported network in an included destination, not purchase or installation alone. An earlier covered home or transit stop can start the clock. Switching the line off does not pause it, and crossing borders does not restart validity or refill shared data.

Keep installed profiles while troubleshooting. Ask AloOui about the exact order before deleting, rescanning or changing phones. A cloud backup or saved QR does not establish transfer or reuse permission.

Buying help, apps and human support

Use Shop with AI on the AloOui website or app after confirming the exact Xperia. Share your route, dates, data usage and number needs, then check the selected variant before checkout. AloOui provides support through the Help Center. Share order, device and error details privately without exposing QR credentials.

Download AloOui for easier shopping. App access does not establish an existing profile's transfer eligibility.

Xperia travel eSIM and microSD FAQs

Can Xperia 1 VII XQ-FS54 use eSIM and microSD?

Sony's model table lists eSIM support with a nano-SIM and memory-card arrangement for XQ-FS54. Confirm your actual model code.

Does every Xperia 1 VII have the same configuration?

Do not assume so. Sony notes that commercial names can cover different model codes and regional SIM arrangements.

Does this guide confirm Xperia 1 VIII eSIM support?

No. Its exact regional eSIM configuration was not established by the checked sources. Confirm it directly with Sony before buying service.

Does a travel eSIM take a memory-card slot?

An eSIM is digital and does not occupy the physical tray, but the phone must support the intended service and line combination.

Is local photo storage the same as travel-data allowance?

No. Uploads and backups can consume mobile data independently of remaining phone or memory-card storage.

Does Europe Extra include a number?

No. It is data-only. The separate UK & EU package above includes a UK number, 50 minutes and 50 SMS across its own 30-destination list.

Does installation alone start AloOui validity?

No. A supported network connection in an included destination starts the travel package, including a covered home or transit location.

Should I remove an installed profile if it has no internet?

Keep it while support checks coverage, remaining service, settings and recovery options.
